Questioner:
April is Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD) awareness month. I can’t image
being in the shoes of parents who have a child with an ASD diagnosis. I can see how raising a child with any form
of ASD can be such a daunting and challenging task. I know that you have experience working with
severely autistic children and their parents.
What can parents do that will help them in their journey with their child?
Wanda:
Autism is a serious concern for
thousands of parents and professionals.
Three suggestions for parents of children with a diagnosis of ASD:
1. You are not alone. Keep in touch with other parents you know who
are experiencing similar situations.
2. Your intuition is often your greatest ally. Follow those nagging ideas that may be
leading you to new possibilities.
3. Focus
on what you and your child can do now and in the future. The cause of ASD may be elusive; but, what your
child can do often transcends the past.
